Standing in a noisy bar with one eye on the CNN Presidential Election coverage and the other on one of my favorite local bands, The Maddhatters, last night, their front man, Anthony DiCarlo shouted "congrats to Obama". It was like everyone's team won the Super Bowl. This is in Canada...did that make any sense? Well, I think it most definetly did. Mainly because I think that anyone who has watched what has happened over the past several years with the economy, real estate, stock market and of course the war in Iraq and the lack of assistance in the Crescent City, everyone wanted a fresh breathe of air, a change! Everyone was looking for New Beginnings. This wasn't just a great change for the U.S. but it was a great change for the world. It signalled evolution. 50 years ago you might get shot in the deep south for just saying this could happen. This was historic. And we got to watch it on CNN on 50 inch plasma screens. Beats reading about it in old History books or Wikipedia!
One day someone will say, where were you when history was made...when the first African-American President was elected? I was at Jacks Cantina. I was moved. I was proud of the American people! Let's hope we can keep that feeling for the next 4 years.
Congrats Obama. Please make sure you remember your friends North of the border. If we could have, we would have voted for you too!! |
