I'll always remember those late nights as a youngster when Pops would let me stay up late to watch Johnny Carson with him. Ed McMahon's voice would introduce Johnny and I would get to watch the monologue and then go to bed. I guess that's how I became a Late Night fan. Dave Letterman became my generation's Johnny Carson. Dave will always be my favorite and I realize he owes his career to Johnny Carson, but I always knew that there was only one King of Late Night - like there is only one King of Rock and Roll. Sure there's a Prince, a King of Funk, a Queen of Soul...but only one King!
So, yesterday (January 23, 2005) we lost another American Icon, someone most of us grew up with in one fashion or another. I still remember Johnny Carson's last show in '92 when Bette Midler sang to him and he sat in his chair in tears and, of course, his poignant good-bye speech. A class act, a classy man.
Not quite sure why I decided to talk about this in our blog, guess some days you look around and realize that it's all just temporary and you have to make the most of it while your here - like a good web site...it's very important ;-) |

As Mr. Warren Zevon said before passing "you have to enjoy every sandwich". Good advice. Think I'll head to the Portage Bakery deli for a Prosciutto and Provolone panini!
